Kids Fitness & Raising Fit Kids
Laying the groundwork for a healthy lifestyle starts when children are young. Incorporating physical activity in a child’s schedule benefits them in that it helps to build strength, coordination, & confidence. Purposefully implementing exercise into a child’s routine can be very beneficial, keeping their mind and body healthy!
These benefits have been seen in three major categories: physical development, cognitive development and psychological well being.
Physical development:
- Improves cardiovascular health – exercise makes your heart and lungs stronger
- Helps to develop beneficial body composition – building more of lean muscle mass supports joints & improves kids’ metabolism
- Boosts childrens’ immune systems – moderate/ high levels of physical activity are linked to lower incidents of illness & infection in children. Exercise is a natural immune system booster!
- Helps children develop physical literacy – “the ability, confidence and desire to be physically active for life.” This sets kids up for a lifetime of enjoying great exercise habits!
- Prevents future injury & pain – builds a strong foundation for children to grow with
Cognitive development:
- Improves children and teens’ memory & processing speed
- Helps them get the most out of school – children pay better attention & put more effort into their schoolwork
- Greater cognitive flexibility – making them able to switch between tasks while not losing any speed or accuracy
Well Being:
- Builds confidence – seeing positive changes like being capable of things they weren’t before or feeling more fit can build self esteem & confidence in children
- Improves mood – reduces negative emotional states and levels of anxiety & depression
- Better management of stress – exercise is a good & healthy way to relieve stress
Tips for raising fit kids:
- Variety – have your kids participate in a variety of activities like: sports, strength training & fitness classes
- Schedule – regularly scheduled physical activity maximizes results & makes exercise a part of their routine
- Small changes – making small changes like choosing stairs over the elevator makes being active a part of daily life
- Set examples – embracing a healthy, active lifestyle for yourself can influence your kids & family to do the same
- Keep it fun! – getting active with friends & family or in a social setting is a great way to make things fun!
