April is here and it is Rosacea Awareness Month!

According to The National Rosacea Society (NRS), April has been designated as Rosacea Awareness Month to educate the public on the real effects of rosacea and to dismantle the misconceptions that surround this chronic skin condition.

An estimated 16 million Americans are affected by rosacea, but many patients have never heard of this disease nor do they know the symptoms associated.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects more than 16 million Americans. While the cause of rosacea is still unknown, and there is no cure, research has allowed doctors to find ways to treat the condition and minimize symptoms.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea can develop at any age but most case studies show that it typically begins after age 30. It primarily affects the central face and presents itself as flushing or redness on the cheeks, nose and chin and sometimes the forehead, along with visible blood vessels. If left untreated, inflammatory bumps and pimples can develop. While rosacea is more commonly diagnosed in women, men also suffer from the condition and have worse symptoms. The nose can become swollen and bumpy from excess tissue, making the skin much thicker. Some individuals have even reported eye irritation with watery or bloodshot eyes also known as ocular rosacea.

What Causes Rosacea?

Rosacea presents itself differently from patient to patient. What triggers one person may not trigger another. In a survey done by the National Rosacea Society, the most common triggers are sun exposure, emotional stress, hot weather, and heavy exercise just to name a few. Patients are encouraged to keep a diary of daily activities in order to refer to in the event of a flare up.

Treatment Options

Symptoms from patients can vary which is why treatments must be specifically tailored to each individual. Your medical professional can prescribe a range of medical therapy to help control the redness that may include oral or topical medication and when appropriate, lasers, intense pulsed light and other medical devices can be used to remove the visible blood vessels.

Patients should always check with a medical professional to ensure their at home skin care regimen is gentle and non-irritating. As always, it is recommended to use a daily physical sunscreen that delivers proper UVA/UVB protection.
