Last Friday, February 12, the Newtown Athletic Club and Autism Cares Foundation partnered to host a Valentine’s Day dance for teens and young adults with special needs. The event, held in the NAC Brown Gym, was a huge success, welcoming over 150 young adults with special needs and their families and friends. Guests enjoyed food, drinks, raffles, dancing, a photobooth and more at the free event.

The event was originally planned as a kickoff event for the NAC’s new FITfinity program, which aims at giving children with special needs an outlet for physical fitness. These classes offer children with special needs a safe environment to be themselves, socialize with peers, be active and have fun. The mission of the FITfinity program aligns with the goal of the Sidekick Social—to provide a way for these individuals to interact with others in a social setting.

“Here at the NAC, our mission every single day is making lives better, even in the smallest ways,” explains Youth Programs Director, Amanda Brown. “We saw an opportunity to put on a great event for the community, and I can truly say that this one event had an impact on every guest, volunteer and family member who attended.”

In addition to the partnership with the Autism Cares Foundation, the Sidekick Social was made possible by the generous donations from various businesses in the community. Sponsors included: Joey G’s Catering, DJ Dolan, Jules Thin Crust Pizza, Sweet Megan, Monday Morning Flower & Ballon Co., ACME of Newtown, NAC Youth Programs, NAC Parties, RockStarz, Big Leagues Baseball Academy, Urban Allure Salon & Spa, and Kids 4 Community.

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped to make this event a huge success.
