7 Reasons Kids Should Get Active!

While eating healthy and getting active are often high on everyone’s list of things to do, these are particularly important for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity is a rapidly growing issue in America, with more than one-third of children and adolescents classified as either overweight or obese (source: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/facts.htm). Here are some reasons why all kids should get up and get active:

1. Sleep better: Participating in physical activity allows children a better night’s sleep at the end of the day. Burning off energy during the day will help them to fall asleep faster and stay asleep.

2. Manage mood: Did you know that exercise releases endorphins, which boost your mood and make you happy? Kids who exercise will not only live a healthier lifestyle, they will also feel better!

3. Improved grades: Exercise helps get blood flowing and sends much needed oxygen to the brain. This means that kids will be able to focus better and help increase performance in the classroom.

4. Develop social skills: Research shows that getting active improves children’s abilities to demonstrate leadership and empathy. Also, exercising in a group setting allows children to interact with others and develop friendships.

5. Lower risk of obesity: Getting active in any way helps to lower the risk of obesity and maintain a healthy weight. In addition, studies show that overweight and obese children have a significantly higher chance of becoming obese adults.

6. Improve self-esteem: Getting fit can also play a role in boosting self-esteem. Whether it is joining a sports team or just self-motivating to stay active, working towards accomplishing a goal has a positive impact on children’s development.

7. Lower risk of developing chronic diseases: Regular physical activity, combined with a healthy diet, help children lower their risk to develop chronic diseases including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and more.

In an effort to break the pattern of childhood obesity and align with the Newtown Athletic Club’s main mission of “Making Lives Better”, youth programs classes strive to provide children with a healthy amount of activity and an emphasis on fitness.
