1. What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of coaching is seeing the joy in an athlete’s face when I am able to get them to a new skill that they thought they were not able to do.

2. What is your proudest accomplishment?

3. What is something most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that I used to be a mascot for the WMBA for 3 years.

4. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I love to workout, travel, go to the movies, test drive new cars, go skydiving, play sports and hangout with good people.

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I have been lucky to have done a lot of traveling in my life. I have been to about 30 states in the U.S. and several different countries. For my next trip, I would love to visit Australia.

The Benefits of Learning How to Swim

Swimming is for everyone, both young and old. There are many reasons we should all learn how to swim. If you learn to swim now, you will have a recreational, aerobic activity that you can continue to enjoy throughout the rest of your life! Here are a few benefits of taking swim lessons and learning how to swim.

1. Water Safety

Each year, a great number of deaths happen while drowning. According to USA Swimming, participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children ages 1-4. Learning to swim teaches kid safety while in the pool and could potentially give them the skills to help save lives.

 2. Fitness

Swimming uses every one of the body’s major muscle groups and is a fantastic aerobic activity to get your heart pumping. A swimming workout is a total body workout, strengthening everything from the core to the legs to the arms. As you push, pull and kick your way through the water, you are simultaneously working muscles from your triceps and biceps to abdominals and everything in between.

3. Health

Participating in a sport reduces the risk of childhood obesity, which is also linked to juvenile diabetes. Swimming is great because of the cardiovascular benefits that promote heart and lung health. Plus, it is an activity that can be done during anytime of the year, on a team or solo.

4. Confidence & Motivation

Some kids are like a fish, while others have a very natural fear of the water. Learning to swim is a great boost for a child’s confidence. Swimming allows kids to face a challenge and conquer that challenge by learning its value. Like riding a bike or flying a kite, swimming allows kids to get better over time with practice and helps to boost a child’s confidence that they can meet a goal on their own.

5. Coordination

Coordination is an important part of our lives. When you swim you need to synchronize what your arms and legs are doing, along with coordinating your breathing and other body movements. Swimming helps with coordination and strength in other, out-of-water situations as a result.

With summer just around the corner, kids everywhere cannot wait to jump into a pool, splash, play and have fun! For inquires about swim lessons, please contact Katie Field at katiefield@newtownathletic.com.

On Sunday, May 8 from 10-11 am and Monday, May 9 from 4-6 pm we are hosting an open house for all swimmers who have questions about Summer I session and are interested in free lesson testing. More information about aquatics Summer I and swim lessons can be found here: http://bit.ly/22z1v7K

April Showers: Rainy Day Activities

We all know “April showers bring May flowers,” but the often unpredictable weather can really put a damper on your fitness plans. Plans for family walks after dinner, bike rides on the weekends or even just a game of catch can get rained out and replaced with lazy days on the couch. While you wait for warmer weather, don’t let those April showers ruin your fitness plans.

With these fun indoor activities, kids can work up a sweat without getting wet!

Musical Kitchen Chairs: Even with chairs, there’s not much sitting involved in this classic game. Invite a few friends over and pump up the music. Kids dance around to their favorite tunes, but when the music stops everyone must find a seat. Those left standing become DJs and get to pick the songs. Last player sitting is the winner!

Commercial Cardio: We know that rainy days mean snuggling up on the couch to watch your favorite show. Work in your workout during those pesky commercial breaks. Kids can do some easy moves like butt kicks, jumping jacks, high knees and more! Every time the commercial changes, switch moves to mix it up.

Partner YogaParents and children can team up to master some cool partner yoga poses. Yoga is a great way to stretch out and get your muscles working. Check out some cool poses for parents and kids to do together here.

Lazer Mazes: Kids will love pretending to be a secret agent or spy with this fun fitness game. All you need is a roll of string and some tape to create your lazer challenge. In a hallway, tape the string to various places on the wall to create a maze. The string is the lazer beam and your child’s task is to get through to the other side without touching the string. This will require them to use their muscles in a controlled way. Once you’ve won you can start over with a different maze for hours of fun!

Charades: This classic game is a great way to get off the couch and moving around. Divide into teams or play as individuals. Kids will have to move around and get active for the other players to guess their card.

What fun ways do you stay active on a rainy day?

Brain Training: How Fitness Affects Academic Performance

It’s common knowledge that exercising and eating balanced meals have a positive impact on physical health and well-being. For children, these practices are especially important because childhood habits often predict adult behavior. However, there are additional benefits to adopting these healthy habits from a young age.

Parents often ask, “How can my child do better in school?” “How can I help improve my child’s grades?”

The answer is simple.

Encourage your child to get up and get active.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) conducted a study to determine if there was a correlation between activity levels and academic performance. Their findings suggested that the more physical activity children were able to participate in, the better their academic performance.

In relation to extracurricular activities, the CDC study concluded that “GPA was positively associated with extracurricular physical activity 12 of the 22 times it was measured. Two studies also examined the association between extracurricular activities and dropout rates and found that participation was linked to decreased high school dropout rates.”

Additionally, regular exercise shows the following effects on the brain:

  • Greater oxygen and blood flow to the brain
  • Improved mood
  • Better immune system function
  • Increased levels of energy
  • Even more!

The benefits of regular physical activity for both adults and children are countless. If you are looking for a way to improve your child’s academic performance and grades, look for ways to include activity into their daily routine.
